2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins With Andres
The 2015 Official Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 and NOAA, (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), is predicting a likelihood of 6 to 11 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 3 to 6 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher). Hurricane Andres is already producing advisories in the Florida area and Tropical Storm Blanca is not far behind
To make sure you're prepared for hurricane related risks FEMA, (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), offers comprehensive information on hurricane preparedness at http://www.ready.gov/hurricanes . You can also find your local National Weather Service emergency information HERE.
The Hurricane names, by the way, are rotated every six years and follow an alphabetical format containing both female and male names, updated and maintained by the international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The only time a name is retired is if a storm is so deadly, (like Katrina in 2005), the WMO decides it would be inappropriate for obvious reasons to ever use that name again.
The 2015 Names:
Andres, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora, Olaf, Patricia, Rick, Sandra, Terry, Vivian, Waldo, Xina, York, and Zelda.
And, no, you can not have a hurricane named after you!
